We're officially halfway through the boxes!
"WHOA! A CHAOS EMERALD!"
Star Post #1: General Info
Chaos Emeralds are often the primary plot MacGuffin as well as the ultimate reward for skilled players in the Sonic series. Seven differently-colored gems of unbelievable power, Eggman has tried to use them for his own sinister means numerous times. Showing up first in Sonic 1 where there were only six of them, their Sonic 2 encore appearance permanently cemented their numbering at seven (give or take certain handheld installments) and added a new benefit for collecting them all: the ability to turn into Super Sonic. In the 2D games and certain 3D ones, they're typically earned by completing Special Stages, but a majority of the 3D titles that they appear in either give them a plot-central role or introduce other methods for earning them. (Such as Sonic Frontiers' vaults or Sonic Colors' Game Land stages.) In addition to the usual super forms, collecting all the Emeralds has also granted other rewards throughout the series, such as extra stages, extra stories, true endings, extra playable characters, and other unlockables. Aside from appearing in a good majority of the games, Chaos Emeralds have also been utilized in comics from all three publishers as well as in half of the Blue Blur's cartoons.
Star Post #2: Trivia
Speaking of the comics, the Chaos Emeralds in Archie's series pre-reboot had a very interesting history. Originally, EVERY Chaos Emerald on Mobius (Sonic's home planet in the early US canon) was green and there were THOUSANDS of them rather than just seven. Emeralds of other colors existed on other planets in the universe, but Sonic and friends typically only encountered green ones. That is, however, until a situation instigated by Eggman's AI "son" A.D.A.M. caused every Chaos Emerald in the entire universe to gather in one place. Before A.D.A.M. could complete his plans for said Emeralds, though, the combined forces of Super Sonic, Super Shadow, and Turbo Tails were able to thwart him, resulting in ALL the gems being lost to the mysterious Zone of Silence. The Zone's master, Feist, then used the Emeralds' supreme power to condense the millions of them into a single set of seven, bringing them more in line with the games. (He also used them to reshape the Zone of Silence, renaming it the Special Zone and providing anyone seeking the Emeralds with challenges to earn them, another nod to the games.) Always neat to see how Archie's original universe changed and evolved over time.
